KABUL, AFGHANISTAN October 7, 2026 -- Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian nonprofit, recently completed a medical mission in Kabul that conducted 106 surgeries, 165 outpatient consultations, and 16 structured workshops across five surgical specialties at Ali Abad Teaching Hospital.
Six visiting surgeons specializing in orthopedics, urology, thoracic surgery, general and laparoscopic surgery, and surgical oncology worked alongside local medical teams to provide complex surgical care and assist with patient screening and referrals.
Among the patients treated was a 7-year-old boy with a knee deformity that made walking difficult. Through the medical mission, he received surgery to address the condition, giving him access to specialized care he needed.
Alongside patient care, the mission emphasized hands-on training for local medical professionals. Nineteen local doctors participated in urology training, while orthopedic workshops recorded 43 attendances across eight hours of workshop. Visiting surgeons shared their expertise through supervised procedures and hands-on teaching, helping local clinicians build practical experience.
“I came to share my knowledge and experience with local doctors, but I was impressed by how skilled and capable they already are,” said Doctor Ahmed Zayed, orthopedic surgeon. “Through two workshops on treating foot deformities in children, we exchanged knowledge and practical techniques that the doctors can apply in their work with our brothers and sisters in Afghanistan.”
For decades, Afghanistan’s healthcare system has faced challenges that have damaged infrastructure and limited access to specialized care. Rebuilding healthcare capacity requires not only resources and facilities, but also opportunities for medical professionals to develop specialized skills and share knowledge. Baitulmaal’s medical missions support access to specialized health services while creating opportunities for practical clinical learning in the communities it serves.
In addition to conducting medical missions in Afghanistan, Baitulmaal has provided winter relief, delivered fresh meat for Udhiyah, Ramadan food packages, school supplies to orphans and emergency aid to Afghans affected by mass deportations.
