UDHIJAH YEMEN

KHARTOUM STATE, SUDAN April 6, 2026 — Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian nonprofit, recently completed its first emergency medical mission in Sudan in coordination with the World Health Organization and Sudan’s Ministry of Health, providing life-saving specialized care to vulnerable patients at the Omdurman Teaching Hospital in Sudan.

A team of highly specialized surgeons in neurosurgery, brain tumors, and pediatric orthopedics was deployed to Sudan, where they worked alongside local medical professionals to deliver specialized surgical care and share expertise, helping restore healthcare capacity and strengthen the local health system.

Over the course of seven days, the team performed more than 45 complex neurosurgery and spine procedures and provided consultations to over 80 patients suffering from neurological  and pediatric orthopedic conditions, addressing trauma injuries and critical neurological conditions.

According to Ahmed Sherif, senior manager of international programs at Baitulmaal, the team also conducted four targeted training workshops with hospital staff to ensure long-term impact and donated essential neurosurgical supplies.

“The medical mission not only treated critical cases but also enhanced the local healthcare system’s ability to serve communities affected by conflict and displacement,” said Sherif. “By doing so, we aim to provide more than care, but also hope.”

During the mission, the team met Mustafa, a pediatric patient who had been waiting for treatment for many years. “When Mustafa was four, he had an accident that injured his leg and left him unable to walk,” said Mustafa’s mother. “Now, at 12, he finally received surgery, and it has given us hope again. We hope that he will be able to walk, play, study, and do things on his own—just like other children his age.”

Omdurman Teaching Hospital is one of Sudan’s largest public referral hospitals, serving thousands of patients from across the region and providing critical medical services to communities affected by conflict and displacement.

In addition to supporting healthcare services, Baitulmaal has provided Ramadan food packages, and delivered fresh meat during Udhiyah in Sudan. If you would like to learn more about or contribute to these programs at Baitulmaal, please Baitulmaal.org.
