COX’S BAZAR, BANGLADESH April 19, 2022 — Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian nonprofit, recently distributed 625 Ramadan food packages that provided 162,000 meals for Rohingya refugees living in camp settlements in Bangladesh.
Families in Cox’s Bazar received a month’s worth of items such as flour, sugar, lentils and oil, basic necessities that are out of reach for many living in refugee camps. Lack of employment and education opportunities keep families struggling to escape poverty after they risked their lives to escape violence, according to Elizabeth Sohail, program director at Baitulmaal.
“Many of these families are still reeling from fires that displaced them from their homes prior to Ramadan last year,” Sohail said. “Having these food packages in time for this year’s Ramadan gives them one less thing to worry about during a month meant for gratitude and reflection.”
Baitulmaal delivered approximately 4 million meals to those in need around the world this past Ramadan. The charity also provides food, water, healthcare and other humanitarian aid to Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh.
