GALKAYO, SOMALIA June 8, 2025 — Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian nonprofit, recently distributed fresh meat for 12,000 meals to impoverished families in Somalia as part of the Islamic season of Udhiyah.

Approximately 2,000 families living in the Mudug region of Galmudug State each received fresh meat from locally-sourced and humanely-slaughtered sheep.

According to Ahmed Sherif, senior manager of international programs at Baitulmaal, most of the beneficiaries were internally displaced people from Harhar camp, women, children, and the elderly.

“Every year, Udhiyah reminds us how something as simple as fresh meat can bring dignity and celebration to families who have lost everything,” Sherif said. “It’s more than a meal—it’s hope.”

According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), an estimated 80 percent of Somalia’s population relies on agriculture and livestock for their livelihoods—sectors that have been heavily impacted by prolonged droughts and rising inflation, deepening food insecurity across the country.

In addition to providing fresh meat for Udhiyah, Baitulmaal has also distributed Ramadan food packages in Somalia. To learn more about or contribute to these efforts, visit Baitulmaal.org.
