GALKAYO, SOMALIA June 17, 2024 — Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian nonprofit, recently distributed fresh meat for 12,000 meals to impoverished families in Somalia as part of the Islamic season of Udhiyah.

Approximately 2,000 families living in the Mudug region received fresh meat from locally-sourced and humanely-slaughtered goats.

The beneficiaries included orphans, the elderly, and women-headed households, according to Ahmed Sherif, international offices manager at Baitulmaal.

“The spirit of Udhiyah should uplift families on this day to better celebrate Eid-ul-Adha,” said Sherif. “Our donors made this possible for all the beneficiaries.”

According to the World Food Programme, 6.6 million people in Somalia are forecast to face crisis levels of hunger or worse – requiring urgent humanitarian assistance. A total of 1.8 million children face acute malnutrition through the year.

In addition to providing fresh meat for Udhiyah, Baitulmaal has also provided Ramadan food packages, opened up a new school, and expanded a hospital building. To learn more about or contribute to these efforts, visit Baitulmaal.org.
