WAJIR, KENYA July 4, 2026 — Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian nonprofit, in partnership with the Wajir County Government, has officially broken ground on the new Baitulmaal Hope Hospital, a healthcare project that will expand access to quality medical services for or an estimated 35,000 patients annually across Wajir County.
The 36-bed hospital will significantly expand healthcare capacity in Wajir County by providing comprehensive outpatient and inpatient care, emergency medical services, maternity services, neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), and select specialist clinics. Once completed, the hospital is expected to strengthen the county's referral system, complement existing public health facilities, and improve access to quality healthcare for Wajir's growing population, helping meet the region's increasing healthcare needs.
“Access to quality healthcare remains a challenge for many families who have to endure long dusty roads to reach limited facilities in far cities with a shortage of specialists, " said Mazen Mokhtar, CEO of Baitulmaal. “For many, seeing a doctor is a necessity they are forced to go without. Our new hospital will help address these gaps by bringing essential care closer to the communities that need it the most”.
The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by representatives from the County Commissioner's Office, county government officials, the County Executive Committee Member for Health (Local Health Minister), the Vice Chancellor of the Islamic University, religious leaders, elders, and members of the local community.
“Meaningful change happens through partnership. We are honored to work alongside the Wajir County Government to expand access to quality healthcare for communities that have long been underserved. Today, we begin changing that reality by investing in healthcare closer to the people,” said Ugas Sheikh Mohamed, current board member of Baitulmaal.
The ceremony also featured the dedication of a time capsule, which will be filled with letters from Baitulmaal's founders, partners, the names of donors and their messages to future generations. The capsule will be buried on the hospital grounds and reopened during the hospital's 100th anniversary as a tribute to those whose generosity and partnership made the project possible and as a reminder of the vision, challenges, and collective effort behind its creation.
“Our hope is that the future generations will remember those whose generosity made this hospital possible and offer prayers for every donor and partner who helped turn this vision into life,” said Mokhtar.
In addition to supporting healthcare in Kenya, Baitulmaal has also responded to emergency aid, restoring sights through cataract surgeries, provided fresh meat for Udhiyah, Ramadan Food Packages, support to orphans, delivering live-saving maternal care, and delivered clean water .
