A Devastating Earthquake

One of Afghanistan’s worst earthquakes struck a country already grappling with humanitarian crises.

Many victims are recently returned Afghans who were attempting to rebuild their lives with stretched resources and limited aid.

🇦🇫 Current Situation

🚨 The Earthquake

    • A powerful 6.0-magnitude quake struck eastern Afghanistan near Jalālābād.

    • Shallow depth (~8 km) caused widespread damage.

    • Multiple aftershocks, including a 5.2 magnitude tremor, followed.

🚑️ Casualties and Damage

  • More than 2,000 dead and 3,500+ injured.

  • Entire villages leveled, mud/stone homes destroyed.

  • Rescue hampered by landslides, blocked roads, and power outages.

📉 Humanitarian Context

  • Over 4 million Afghans were already displaced, accounting for the second-largest displaced population in the world after Syria.
  • More than 1 million Afghans have returned or were forcibly deported from neighboring countries so far this year (2025).
  • Half of Afghanistan’s population relies on aid (23 million people).
