A baby’s first cry filled the room, sharp, fragile, and full of life. For most mothers, that moment is expected, even anticipated. But in the Baitulmaal Hope Hospital in Mogadishu, Somalia, it carried something even deeper: it marked a new beginning.
Doctors and nurses moved quickly through the corridors, preparing for what would be one of the first deliveries in the newly launched Baitulmaal Hope Hospital. There was a quiet urgency in the air, not of panic, but of purpose. A space that had long been missing was finally ready to welcome life.
Nasra, a young Somali mother of three, lay on the delivery bed exhausted but hopeful, accompanied by her husband. She had spent her entire pregnancy without a single prenatal visit, not by choice, but because a lack of access to care and resources had made it impossible. For months, she carried her baby without medical support, unsure of what each day might bring.
But on this day, everything changed.
Under the care of skilled medical staff, Nasra gave birth safely to her baby girl, Sagal. There were no complications. The newborn was immediately placed in her arms, receiving essential newborn care, including eye ointment to help prevent infections that are too common in this region.
As Nasra held her daughter close, the tension that had filled her body slowly faded. It was her first moment of peace in a long journey marked by uncertainty.

“This is the first time I feel truly safe,” she said tearfully.
The hospital, built to serve mothers and children in one of Somalia’s most vulnerable communities, was no longer just a structure, it was a place where new life could begin with dignity, safety, and care.
“This successful outcome reflects the strong teamwork between the maternity and newborn units at this hospital, as well as our shared commitment to safe delivery and quality newborn care,” said a pediatrician at the hospital. “We would also like to extend our sincere gratitude to Baitulmaal and all donors whose support made this facility possible and helped ensure a safe delivery for this baby.”
And in that moment, amid the soft cries of a newborn, hope quietly entered the room.
Through Baitulmaal Hope Hospital, mothers like Nasra are now able to access safe delivery services and essential newborn care in one of Somalia’s most vulnerable communities.
