BAMAKO, MALI March 8, 2026 -- Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian nonprofit, recently distributed food packages providing more than 54,857 meals to impoverished families in Mali during Ramadan.
More than 200 families received food packages in Bamako containing red beans, rice, sugar, salt, flour and cooking oil and multivitamins for lactating mom. Additionally, 1,000 hot meals were served during a community Iftar, where families gathered to break their fast.
According to Ahmed Sherif, senior manager of international programs at Baitulmaal, most of the beneficiaries were orphan families, women, disabled people, and the elderly.
“Many families in Mali are struggling to meet their basic needs, especially as Ramadan approaches,” said a Baitulmaal representative in Africa. “Nearly 70 percent of Malians live below the poverty line, and support like this brings real relief to families who need it most. We are deeply grateful to the donors whose generosity made these food distributions possible.”
In addition, prenatal vitamins, counseling, and nutrition services were provided to 500 expectant women across 10 countries (approximately 50 per country), highlighting the importance of regular medical check-ups and professional follow-up to monitor fetal development and maternal recovery. Participants were also educated on the essential role of vitamins and minerals for both mother and child.
According to the World Food Programme, nearly 1.6 million children under five in Mali are at risk of acute malnutrition, highlighting the urgent need for nutrition support for mothers and young children.
