DALLAS, TX May 13, 2024 — Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian nonprofit, recently distributed 14,044,630 Ramadan meals across 20 different countries in Africa, Europe, the Middle East, North America and South Asia as part of the Islamic month of Ramadan.

More than 34,500 families were provided food packages that included basic food necessities such as rice, sugar, salt, flour, and cooking oil customized for each country based on their traditional diets and needs. In addition to food packages, Baitulmaal hosted community iftars and food kitchens that provided 106,000 warm meals. Beneficiaries live in countries such as Afghanistan, Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh, Bosnia, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Jordan, Kenya, Lebanon, Libya, Mexico, Morocco, Myanmar, Nigeria, Pakistan, Palestine, Somalia, Syria, Togo, Syrian and Uyghur refugees in Turkiye, and Yemen.

Many of the beneficiaries included orphans, displaced people, women-headed households, people with disabilities, and the elderly according to Elora Bashir, program operations manager at Baitulmaal.

“Sharing meals with family and the community is an integral part of Ramadan,” said Bashir. “It is our duty, as their Muslim brothers and sisters, to ensure that families who are less fortunate are not deprived of these blessings.”

According to the World Bank, more than 200 million people are facing a food crisis. This is due in part to rising costs and disruption in the availability of food. Low-income households spend a majority of their income on food, making them more vulnerable to food insecurity when faced with inflation and other emergencies, such as natural disasters and escalating violence.

In addition to seasonal Islamic giving programs, Baitulmaal coordinates emergency aid efforts; water, hygiene, and sanitation projects; orphan support programs; and other humanitarian aid to under-served populations regardless of faith or nationality. Baitulmaal is an international humanitarian aid organization that provides life-saving, life-sustaining and life-enriching aid to people in need around the world. With headquarters in Texas, the charity has domestic offices in California, Florida, Illinois, Michigan and New Jersey as well as international offices in Europe, Africa, South Asia and the Middle East.
