URFA, TURKEY, March 29, 2022 — Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian nonprofit, recently distributed winter relief to Syrian refugee families who arrived at the Turkish border town of Urfa.

Approximately 180 families received two heavy winter blankets each to help keep them warm. Many of the families live in the Al Jebeen refugee camp, but more than half are sheltering in caves on the outskirts of the settlement. Living conditions are especially harsh during winter months, according to Yousef Abdallah, Baitulmaal’s National Fundraising Director who recently visited the area.

“Some families sleep alongside animals at night in exchange for caring for them during the day because they have no other way to survive,” Abdallah said. “They were so grateful for the winter blankets they received to help keep them warm inside these cold and drafty caves.”

According to the UN Refugee Agency, Syria still has the largest displaced population in the world. More than 6.7 million people — including 2.5 million children — are displaced within Syria. Another 6.6 million Syrians live as refugees in neighboring countries such as Lebanon, Jordan and Turkey. More than 90 percent of refugees live in extreme poverty and lack essential needs and services such as food, water, shelter, and healthcare.

Baitulmaal has been on the ground in Syria mobilizing aid after destructive storms, delivering food, digging wells, supporting orphans, helping students and distributing zakat, clothing and gifts.
