TELL ABYAD, SYRIA August 15, 2022 — Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian nonprofit, recently completed the restoration of the Khirbet Al-Riz school in Tell Abyad, Syria that benefits 550 Syrian refugee children.

The school, which consists of two buildings, one for preparatory and another for primary education, was damaged in the course of the more than decade-long Syrian civil war. The reconstruction began in November 2021 and the school reopened earlier this month.

According to Elizabeth Sohail, program manager at Baitulmaal, the school required new roofing, windows, doors, and bathroom facilities among other repairs. It was also outfitted with a new well that serves the neighboring community. Approximately 13,895 people benefit from the restoration.

“Whether it’s accessing safe, clean water or the opportunity that education brings, this school restoration has brought so much hope to this community,” Sohail said. “War destroys, but compassion rebuilds. There’s always hope where there’s compassion.”

The Syrian crisis has left more than 6 million internally displaced and another 6 million as refugees. Around 13.4 million people living within Syria – including those who are internally displaced – are in need of humanitarian assistance, according to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees. Millions of children have been out of school due to poverty, displacement and destruction. It is estimated that 7,000 schools have been damaged or destroyed during the course of the war.

Baitulmaal has been on the ground in Syria delivering food, digging wells, restoring schools, supporting orphans, helping students and distributing seasonal aid. To learn more about or contribute to these efforts, visit Baitulmaal.org.
