Crop Failures, Wage Loss, Hunger
According to the Global Hunger Index, Kenya is experiencing serious levels of hunger and, throughout the past 20 years, its security score has consistently declined.
Research cited by The Conversation suggests that half of the employed Kenyan population works in agriculture, but only 20% of the land is suitable for growth.
Additionally, the recent lack of rain has resulted in widespread crop failure, leaving many communities without wages, water, or food.
Further, approximately 30% of Kenyans rely on unclean ponds, rivers, and wells for their water sources, which are also drastically impacted by a lack of fresh rainfall.
These circumstances expose already vulnerable communities to dehydration and waterborne illness, such as cholera.
