As part of our strategic expansion in West Africa, we are seeking a dynamic and experienced leader to direct, strengthen, and scale our regional presence.

Position Overview

The West Africa Director will provide strategic leadership, operational oversight, and program development expertise to ensure Baitulmaal’s initiatives in the region are impactful, sustainable, and aligned with the organization’s global vision. The role requires strong leadership, program management experience, and relationship-building skills to engage with governments, donors, and strategic partners.

This position will be based in a major West African capital and will serve as the primary liaison between Baitulmaal’s International Headquarters and regional teams. The West Africa Director will oversee all aspects of program growth, risk management, compliance, and institutional fundraising.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership & Program Growth

  • Develop and implement a regional strategy aligned with Baitulmaal’s global mission.
  • Lead the expansion and operational scale-up of Baitulmaal’s humanitarian and development programs in West Africa.
  • Ensure programs are evidence-based, sustainable, and locally driven.
  • Provide guidance on emergency preparedness and response strategies for the region.

Team Leadership & Capacity Building

  • Build, manage, and mentor a high-performing, mission-driven regional team.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, innovation, and collaboration within the region.
  • Oversee recruitment, professional development, and performance management of staff.

Compliance & Risk Management

  • Ensure all regional offices comply with Baitulmaal’s standards, policies, and procedures.
  • Implement best practices for risk management, security, and humanitarian access in conflict-prone areas.
  • Oversee financial accountability and ethical resource management in line with donor requirements.

Partnerships & Representation

  • Serve as Baitulmaal’s primary representative with government agencies, UN bodies, INGOs, and donors in West Africa.
  • Strengthen relationships with local NGOs, development networks, and funding agencies to enhance collaboration and resource mobilization.
  • Advocate for Baitulmaal’s mission and programs at the regional and international levels.

Grant Acquisition & Financial Oversight

  • Develop and execute a robust grant acquisition strategy to secure funding for regional programs.
  • Manage and oversee the regional budget, ensuring efficiency, compliance, and impact.
  • Set and track fundraising and programmatic targets to support long-term sustainability.

Other Responsibilities:

  • Support the operational launch of new Baitulmaal initiatives in the region.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support organizational goals.

Qualifications & Experience

Leadership & Program Expertise

  • Deep understanding of humanitarian and development trends in West Africa.
  • Proven expertise in program design, strategic planning, and multi-sectoral interventions.
  • Strong experience in budget control, grant management, and fundraising.
  • Experience managing programs in conflict-prone, climate-affected, or post-disaster settings.
  • Minimum 10 years of experience in international humanitarian or development work, including at least 5 years in a senior leadership role.

Education & Language Skills

  • Master’s degree in Social Sciences, Sustainable Development, Program Management, or a related field OR 10+ years of proven experience in humanitarian and sustainable development work.
  • Fluency in English is required. Proficiency in French is strongly preferred, and Arabic is an asset.
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills with strong attention to detail.

Technical & Operational Skills

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and other program management software.
  • Ability to work in cross-border, remote, and emergency response environments.
  • Familiarity with institutional donor engagement and funding mechanisms.
