Poverty, Displacement, and the Pandemic

While thousands continue to battle debilitating physical and mental implications of the virus, many more are struggling with devastating losses of loved ones.

The pandemic’s subsequent international economic crisis continues to dig families further into poverty through widespread job loss and a decrease in global opportunity.

This poverty has exacerbated worldwide food insecurity, forcing many to rely on donations and assistance programs to eat.

Additionally, the Kaiser Family Foundation reports the stress related to pandemic-induced poverty has resulted in a spike of mental health challenges, substance abuse, and cases of domestic violence.

However, many of our impoverished neighbors around the world lack the essential resources needed to protect themselves and others, and often live within communal environments, making physical distancing a challenge.

Low-income communities are more likely to contract the virus, often because of preexisting medical conditions and lack of preventative care, as well as increased exposure at essential workplaces, such as hospitals, schools and grocery stores.
