KABUL, AFGHANISTAN May 17, 2022 — Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian nonprofit, recently delivered 500 food packages that provided 225,000 meals for impoverished families in Afghanistan during Ramadan.

More than 3,700 Afghans living in the mountainous region of Badakhshan received food packages that contained flour, sugar, oil and dates. According to Elizabeth Sohail, program director at Baitulmaal, many of the families were landless and had no income sources. Recipients included orphans, widows, amputees and the elderly.

“These families live in geographically difficult places to reach, and they were in great need of this food assistance,” Sohail said. “They were so grateful to donors who ensured that families like theirs were included in Ramadan giving.”

Baitulmaal delivered approximately 4 million meals to those in need around the world this past Ramadan. The food distribution in Afghanistan was coordinated with the local Afghan-American-founded Education and Occupation Committee (EOC). The two charities have been working together to address the needs of Afghan families in crisis.
